The Republican Party, cults and their money

Use to be people thought of the Moonies as a cult. But now, thanks, in part, to George and Barbara Bush who get $100K a pop for giving pro Moonie speeches, they are not perceived that way. For starters see GOP and Straight; GOP and Scientology™; FACTNET.

Repression in the US embassy in Rome by Wes Fager

The St. Petersburg Times has lost its objectivity and its respect as a major news source once known for its ethics in journalism. It has chosen, instead, to become the progaganda arm of the Pinellas County Republican Party--the same as FOX News and Rush Limbaugh are mouth pieces for the National GOP. On or about February 23, 2005 the US Embassy in Rome apparently notified the Times (the hometown newspaper for US Ambassador to Italy Melvin Sembler) that a building in Rome would be named for the Ambassador on February 24. Without any further investigation the Times reported this announcement in an article on February 24.

Last week Al Kamen of the Washington Post reported the real scoop. He broke the story that Ambassador Sembler and Congressman Bill Young had concocted a scheme whereby Mel Sembler would personally negotiate the buy of an $83 million mansion in Rome and Bill Young, chairman of the House's Appropriation Committee, would see to it that funds would be appropriated plus another $30 million would be set aside to refurbish it. And then the two named the building and its great hall as a monument to themselves! The cat is out of the bag, yet the Times will not report it. And now the Embassy's web page links to the Embassy-fed Times article, but does not mention the embarrassing Post article! What is the difference between this intentional ommission of the true facts and Sadam Hussein's claim that he holds free elections and always gets 100% of ALL votes!

This is just garden variety "repression" of which Mel Semler is expert. For 17 years he ran a program to brainwash and crush the spirits of 50,000 American teenagers and children. In his Straight program he forbade kids from reading a newspaper or watching the news--in some cases for almost two years. Certainly embassy employees, assigned CIA agents and guardian Marines read the news when off duty. And just as certainly they know the man for whom they work is not allowing the whole story to be told. It makes him a lame duck and ineffectual.

George Bush would have us endanger the lives of American soldiers in Iraq by defending their electoral system and government officials, while he is jerked around on puppet strings by an Ambassador who is an ever-growing embarrasment to this nation and who will not let the President fire him.
